Casting Chemicals – Foundry Chemicals

Casting is a process in metalworking and jewelry making where liquid metal (typically poured with a crucible) is poured into a mold containing a negative impression of the intended shape (i.e., a 3D negative image). The metal is poured into the mold through a hollow channel called a sprue. The metal and mold are then cooled, and the metal part (the casting) is removed. Casting is often used to create complex geometries that are difficult or uneconomical to produce by other methods.

The casting process has been known for thousands of years and is widely used to produce sculptures (especially in bronze), jewelry from precious metals, weapons, and tools. Traditional techniques include investment casting (which can be divided into lost-wax casting and vacuum-assisted direct casting), plaster mold casting, and sand casting.

Modern casting processes are divided into two main categories: expendable mold casting and permanent mold casting. They can also be further categorized by the mold material, such as sand or metal, and the pouring method, such as gravity, vacuum, or low pressure.

1. Coke Chemicals:
   • Coke coating agents: Used to prevent sticking and oxidation of metal molds.
   • Coke release agents: Used to ensure easy separation of the mold from the cast metal part.
2. Casting Mold Surface Improvers:
   • Mold coating chemicals: Smooth mold surfaces and improve the surface quality of the cast metal.
   • Mold release agents: Facilitate the separation of molds from metal parts while preserving surface quality.
3. Metal Refining and Casting Aids:
   • Anti-foaming agents: Used to prevent foam formation during metal casting.
   • Metal refiners: Help remove excess gases and impurities from the casting metal.
4. Cooling and Solidification Control Chemicals:
   • Cooling water chemicals: Used to maintain cooling water quality and control temperature in the casting process.
   • Solidification control chemicals: Used to ensure the metal solidifies uniformly and in the desired manner.
5. Post-Casting Cleaning and Coating:
   • Post-casting cleaning chemicals: Used to clean the surface of cast metal parts and remove contaminants.
   • Coating chemicals: Used to protect, color, or impart desired properties to cast parts.
