definition

Melamine is an organic compound with the chemical formula C3H6N6, a white solid, a cyanamide trimer with a 1,3,5-triazine skeleton.
Like cyanamide, it contains 67% nitrogen by mass and has flame retardant properties due to the release of nitrogen gas when burned or charred.

usage area

Melamine can be combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resins. These resins are characteristically high-strength thermoset plastics used in high-pressure decorative laminates such as Formica and melamine dinnerware.
Melamine is used in foam insulation, soundproofing, and polymeric hygiene products.
Melamine is sometimes illegally added to food products to increase the apparent protein content.
Ingestion of melamine can cause reproductive damage, bladder and kidney stones, and bladder cancer. It causes irritation when inhaled or in contact with skin and eyes.
Melamine is one of the most important components of the pigment Pigment Yellow 150 used in inks and plastics.
Melamine is also used in the manufacture of melamine poly-sulfonate, which is used as a superplasticizer to produce high-strength concrete.
Sulfonated melamine formaldehyde (SMF) is a polymer used as a cement additive to reduce the water content of concrete while increasing its fluidity and workability during mixing and pouring.
Melamine derivatives of arsenical pharmaceuticals are used in the treatment of African trypanosomiasis.
In agriculture, it is also used to increase the nitrogen content in soil and enhance soil fertility.
