Definition
Sodium carbonate, also known by its common names disodium carbonate and soda ash, is the disodium salt of carbonic acid. Sodium carbonate is an organic sodium salt and a carbonate salt. It is colorless or white, crystalline, granular or powder; in anhydrous form it is hygroscopic.
Area of Use
It is added to other chemicals used as bleach in wool, cotton, linen, general cleaning, water softening, photography, and pharmaceuticals; used in glass and soap production, and as a food additive. Sodium carbonate is also used as a fungicide. It is used as a disinfectant for hard surfaces.
The reason for its use as a food additive is that it is an acidity regulator. In the medical field, it is an active ingredient used in pharmaceuticals.
Sodium carbonate is also used as an inactive ingredient in many pesticide products.
In the detergent industry: sodium carbonate is used directly as a builder in detergent formulations or indirectly in the production of other chemicals used as builders such as sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) and sodium silicates.
Soda ash has environmental applications in wastewater and acid waste neutralization and is used as an alkali source in the pulp and paper sectors, textile industry, and brine purification.
