Sodium Formate

Sodium formate is the monosodium salt of formic acid, typically appearing as a white, powdery, hygroscopic, and organic sodium salt.
It acts as a buffer and astringent. It contains the formate ion.

CO + NaOH → HCO2Na
Through the carbonylation of alcohol and the hydrolysis of the resulting methyl formate; due to the low-cost and large-scale availability of formic acid, sodium formate is often obtained by neutralizing formic acid with sodium hydroxide.
Sodium formate is used in many different fabric dyeing and printing processes. Moreover, it is used as a buffering agent to raise the pH of strong mineral acids, as a food additive (with the code E237), and as a de-icing agent.
Additionally, in the field of biology, it is used in X-ray diffraction experiments to reduce the effects of radiation.
