Definition
Yellowish brown powder, completely soluble in water, naturally occurring anionic surfactants of high molecular weight polymers, rich in sulfo and carboxyl groups, and has better water solubility, surface activity, and dispersing capacity. Can be used in construction and ceramics.
Application Area
In plants, lignin is found in the cell wall and, together with cellulose, provides the woody structure and durability of the plant. It is not used in papermaking but is a by-product of paper production. It is abundantly found in class 2 and 3 papers (such as mimeograph paper, yellow papers like straw paper). Lignin degrades over time, shortening the lifespan of paper.
Most plant tissues contain, in addition to carbohydrates and foreign components, an amorphous and polymeric substance called lignin. In mature wood tissue, the amount of lignin varies between 18% and 38%. Lignin is also found in varying proportions in grasses and herbs.
The biological role of lignin in living plants is to form a tissue with excellent resistance and durability together with the cellulose and other carbohydrates of the cell wall. The chemical properties of lignin and the other two groups of natural polymers, carbohydrates and proteins, are quite different from each other. For example; wood lignins are primarily aromatic in structure and are not easily or almost completely soluble in known solvents. Their hydrolysis into monomer units is not possible, and they lack the regular structure that is the most important characteristic of other natural polymers.
