Surface-Active Wetting Agent

Surface active wetting agents are chemical compounds that reduce the surface tension of liquids, increasing their ability to spread over surfaces. They are also known as surfactants. Such substances are commonly used in cleaning products, cosmetics, industrial processes, and agricultural chemicals. They exhibit properties such as wetting, spreading, and emulsion formation.

Surface active wetting agents consist of molecules containing two distinct regions with hydrophilic (water-attracting) and lipophilic (oil-attracting) properties. These two regions mediate between different components such as water and oil, enabling them to mix. In this way, they can hold together substances that normally do not mix, such as oil and water.

Wetting agents are generally divided into four different categories:

1. Surface Active Agents (Anionic, Cationic, Nonionic, Zwitterionic):This category is widely used in cleaning products and personal care products. Anionic surfactants produce negatively charged ions, while cationic surfactants produce positively charged ions. Nonionic surfactants, on the other hand, do not carry any charge and generally have the mildest effect.
2. Non-Surface Active Emulsions (Especially Short-Chain Alcohols and Lipids):They form emulsions by enabling mixing between liquids. They are frequently used in cosmetic products such as creams and lotions.
3. Emulsions Containing Surface Active Agents:They combine both surface-active and non-surface-active emulsions. They are generally used for transporting substances such as pharmaceuticals or agricultural chemicals.
4. Foams Containing Surface Active Agents:This is a category frequently found in products such as creams and toothpastes. Thanks to their surface-active content, they enable foam formation.
