Chemicals used in the cosmetics industry are employed to ensure product compatibility with the skin, achieve desired effects (moisturizing, cleansing, protection, coloring, etc.), extend shelf life, and enhance sensory properties. These chemicals are selected based on the formulation and used in varying dosages.
Chemicals Used in the Cosmetics Industry and Their Applications
1.Solvents & Carriers
Enable the dissolution of other ingredients and provide the appropriate consistency for the product.
Water (Aqua):Most common carrier
Alcohol (ethanol,isopropyl alcohol):Antibacterial and solvent
Glycerin:Moisture-retaining and softening carrier
Propylene glycol:Solvent and humectant
Usage:In liquid and semi-liquid products such as toners, perfumes, lotions, and creams
2.Emulsifiers
Bind water and oil together to create a homogeneous structure.
Cetearyl alcohol
Usage:To provide stable consistency in creams, lotions, and hair care products
3.Surfactants
Perform functions such as cleansing, foaming, and degreasing.
Cocamidopropyl betaine
Decyl glucoside(gentler alternative)
Usage:Shampoo, shower gel, facial cleanser, makeup remover
4.Preservatives
Prevent microbial growth and extend shelf life.
Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben)
Usage:In all water-based cosmetic formulations; to prevent contamination risk
5.Humectants & Emollients
Soften the skin and lock in moisture.
Hyaluronic acid
Shea butter, jojoba oil, argan oil
Usage:Skin and hair care products, moisturizers, serums
6.Colorants & Fragrances
Enhance the aesthetic and sensory perception of the product.
Cosmetic dyes specified by CI numbers (e.g.,CI 77491 – iron oxide)
Natural and synthetic fragrances, essential oils
Usage:Lipstick, blush, foundation, perfume, deodorant
7.Active Ingredients
Provide the claimed effect of the product: anti-aging, anti-acne, sun protection, etc.
Retinol (Vitamin A derivative): Anti-aging
Salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide: Anti-acne
Niacinamide: Spot corrector, skin tone equalizer
