Chemicals used in the rubber industry

The rubber industry uses various chemicals in the production of tires and elastomer products. These chemicals are critical for improving the processing, performance, and durability of rubber, as well as optimizing shaping and vulcanization processes.

Chemicals Used in the Rubber Industry and Their Applications

1.Polymers & Rubber Compounds

Used as the primary raw material.

  • Natural rubber (NR)

  • Synthetic rubbers (SBR, NBR, EPDM, CR, etc.)

Application:Main material for rubber products such as tires, gaskets, hoses, and belts

2.Fillers

Optimizes the mechanical properties and cost of rubber.

Application:For enhancing durability, abrasion resistance, and flexibility

3.Curing Agents

Enables rubber to harden through crosslinking.

  • Sulfur (most common vulcanizing agent)

  • Peroxides(especially for silicone rubber)

  • Metal oxides (zinc oxide, lead oxide)

  • Vulcanization accelerators (thiazoles, dithiocarbamates)

Application:Tire production and rubber molding processes

4.Oils & Plasticizers

Improves processability of rubber, provides flexibility and softness.

  • Paraffinic and naphthenic oils

  • Phthalates and non-phthalate plasticizers

  • Synthetic plasticizers

Application:Reducing the viscosity of the rubber compound and facilitating processing

5.Antioxidants & Antiozonants

Prevents aging of rubber due to oxidation and ozone effects.

  • Amine-type antioxidants

  • Phenolic antioxidants

  • Antiozonant waxes and oils

Application:Outdoor protection to enhance the durability of rubber products

6.Colorants & Pigments

Used for the aesthetic appearance of products.

Application:Providing color in tires and other rubber products

7.Chemical Modification and Processing Aids

Improves the physical properties of rubber.

Application:To improve processability and surface quality during production
